Title tag

A title tag will tell you what a page is about as accurately as possible . It usually consists of 50 to 60 characters. Nevertheless, Google's result page is limited to a certain pixel width. This is exactly why this tool is so useful. Whenever your title tag exceeds the 600px limit, Google will break off your text starting from the word exceeding that limit. Long story short: use our tool to make sure your entire title tag stays intact.

Description tag

From a technical point-of-view, the description tag is less important for SEO. Then again, SEO is more than just keywords. Use the description tag to convince your potential visitor to click through by providing additional arguments. A higher click-through ratio (CTR) impacts your page's SEO value. So, in that sense, a description tag is important for SEO. It consists of somewhere between 155 and 160 characters, but do make sure you stay within the pixel width limit of 1350px.

Good to know

Mobile first

More than half of Google searches around the globe are carried out with a mobile device. That is why it's a good idea to always optimise for mobile. Remember: a mobile screen is smaller and visitors want their information even quicker than those who are browsing on a desktop computer. Just make sure you don't make your tags any longer than they need to be.

Google won't always use your meta tags

Experiments teach us that Google often generates its own meta descriptions, based on the content of your page. Why? Because Google developed an AI-algorithm called Rankbrain. This algorithm focuses on returning relevant quality results for queries. Not just for the high volume ones, but even more so for long-tail key phrases. Whenever Rankbrain thinks your meta description doesn't match a query and assumes the user can't find what he's looking for, it will generate a description using information on the page.

Does that mean you shouldn't even bother writing your own meta tags? Not at all. We recommend finding a balance between hands-on information and a commercial call-to-action that leads people to your website. That is, after all, still your main goal.

Meta tags and their SEO value

Sooner or later, everyone involved with SEO will talk about the influence meta tags have on SEO. That shouldn't come as a surprise, since Google changes its algorithm all the time. As a result, criteria often change as well. Just take our word for it: use your main keyword or phrase in your meta title. It only makes sense, since your main keyword should be very relevant to your page. Make sure your description matches the page's content as well. If it doesn't, your visitors will be gone before you can say bounce. We don't need to explain why that is bad for SEO, do we?
