Web interfaces on industrial machines
Robust industrial machinery. Not exactly what comes to mind when we talk about state-of-the-art technology and internet-of-things-devices. And yet it goes together perfectly, in Cologne at least. Intracto is involved in the renewal of the products at Leybold, both at strategic and technical level, together with several other technology companies.
Leybold in Cologne is part of the international Atlas Copco group and is specialised in design and manufacturing of industrial pumps. Their machines are used in a variety of sectors for business-critical production processes, from the food industry to the chemical sector. Sectors where there is no margin for error.
A better user experience with interactive manuals
These business-critical machines need regular maintenance and controls. This is first taken care of by engineers on the shop floor. Then, the maintenance operations are carried out by Leybold technicians themselves.
In addition, there are several extensions for the interface in the pipeline, such as interactive 3D models that show where a particular component is located.
Composing manuals efficiently
Dozens of product series. Hundreds of models in total, each with its own manual, technical data sheets, technical drawings, etc. Together with Leybold, we developed a user-friendly online tool to compile and manage these manuals and all related documents.
A cleverly conceived cascade system of content allows the reuse of certain parts, as well as the fast implementation of adaptations through certain documentation. This way, Leybold saves time and content creation is efficiently done.
The smooth cooperation between engineers, product designers and international translation staff is central for our tool. From the tool, updates can also be automatically rolled out to the various Docker containers, which are then distributed to the various devices worldwide.
- Docker containers ensure that the web servers and interface run separately from the critical pump PCIs.
- Docker containers allow small incremental updates to be carried out over the network or via 4G. This keeps pumps up to date worldwide.
- Application via open-source Symfony PHP framework to create manuals.
Conclusion: every device is a connected device
Web technology is ideally suited as a flexible technological solution in industries where you do not immediately expect it. Even if there is no internet nearby, today's technology allows the use of web-based applications.
With added communication modules, any device can become a connected device, no matter where it is.
